We often unconsciously make value judgments about situations and others based on beliefs informed by our experience that confirm our existing internal narrative.

We find comfort in knowing where we stand and what’s expected of us. But what we really want is to know where we belong and how we stay there.

But is this attachment to the status quo really serving us? Isn’t there room to improve ourselves, our situation, and those we seek to serve?

What happens if you suspend your certainty and judgment? After all, most of what we believe isn’t empirically true. It’s anecdotal.

What if instead of seeking certainty, you sought confusion and embraced not knowing?

Uncertainty nurtures consideration. Consideration boosts compassion, encouraging connection, and common purpose. And all this leads to breaking and bending the status quo to make things better.

What if, instead of certainty and judgment, you practiced a little more curiosity and consideration toward others, yourself, and your situation?

How might that change things?

This is an excerpt from Onward: Where Certainty Ends Possibility Begins. The audio comes from the audiobook edition available on Audible.
