Perfect In Every Way

How do you reply to the questions that come up in an everyday exchange of pleasantries? Questions like "How are you?" or "How is everything?"

For years my response has been, "Perfect in every way."

Am I a Pollyanna or just delusional? I mean, really, even the magical Mary Poppins was only "Practically perfect in every way!"

Initially, I was just trying to be funny. Over time, though, my response became an intentional way of being in the world.

I know I'm not really perfect in every way, and neither is "everything." But at the moment someone asks me how I am or how everything is, I am who I am and where I am.

I and my circumstances are "perfect in every way" simply because they are as they are.

And at that moment lies my opportunity to:

  • Frame myself and my situation in a way that creates worthwhile choices.
  • Make an assertion about who I want to be and how I can make things better.
  • Choose and take my next best step forward into that possibility.

I will, of course, do all of this imperfectly. "Everything" will not turn out as planned. But everything will unfold as it should.

And then?

I'll find myself in a new opportunity. I can again frame myself and my situation. And, I'll have another chance to decide what's next and can then step into that aspiration.

I’ve been a freelancer all my life as a musician, teacher, writer, coach, and community leader.

Like anyone, I’ve experienced challenges and misfortune. I’ve failed or fallen short far more often than I’ve succeeded. Yet, I’ve felt a sense of thriving every step of the way.

“Perfect in every way” is an attitude anyone can adopt.

"How are you?" "How is everything?" How are you answering these questions today?

Let's keep flying higher together!
