Does purpose matter?

Every ancient spiritual and philosophical tradition discusses and defines the meaning of life and encourages followers to find and leverage purpose.

Maybe that's because almost everyone could expect to experience some combination of natural disaster, famine, war, enslavement, or plague back then?

Existential threats to one's existence do tend to sharpen the focus...

Although these dangers still exist; statistically, very few people reading this face them daily. Instead, you likely experience quite the opposite—an abundance of convenience, choice, and distraction.

I think this makes finding, defining, and refining one's purpose all the more vital to the art of living well (meaning living a fulfilling life of meaning and wellbeing).

Human beings are purpose-driven creatures. Why? Here are a few reasons.

  • Purpose provides motivation and meaning in our lives
  • Purpose encourages connection and collaboration
  • Purpose gives our lives direction and initiates intentional action
  • Purpose promotes health and happiness
  • Purpose cultivates resolve and resilience

And yet, finding your purpose is not taught in school. Nor are we asked to bring it with us on the job.

What to do?

If purpose matters to you, isn't it your responsibility to explore, embrace, and engage your power to connect with the routines and relationships that promote it?
